Floating
Floating is the first coat of plaster applied directly onto bare brick, block, or stone, and it is the stage that sets the standard for everything that follows. Before any finishing coat goes on, the wall needs a solid, level base, and that is exactly what floating creates. It is a critical part of any new build, extension, loft conversion, or full re-plaster, and one that is often rushed or underestimated by people who should know better.
The mix, the timing, and the technique all matter here. I apply a scratch coat that bonds directly to the substrate, building up an even, stable surface that is properly keyed and ready to accept the finishing coat. Every wall is checked for level and consistency before I move on, because any unevenness at this stage will show straight through to the finished surface.
Whether it is a single wall being stripped back or an entire property taken to bare brick, the groundwork gets the same care and attention. A flawless plaster finish always starts well below the surface.
Skimming
Skimming is the application of a thin, smooth finishing coat of plaster, and it is one of the most common plastering services I carry out. It is what takes a rough or tired surface and turns it into something flat, clean, and completely ready to decorate. The difference between a well skimmed wall and a poor one is obvious the moment light catches the surface, so I take real care to get it right every time.
I skim over plasterboard, existing plaster, and patched surfaces, working across the full area to keep the coat consistent in thickness and texture. Edges where walls meet ceilings and corners are kept sharp and clean throughout. The finished surface needs no sanding, no filling, and no extra prep before paint or wallpaper goes on.
Skimming is typically needed after new plasterboarding work, following damage repairs, or as part of a full room re-plaster. Whether it is one wall or an entire house, you can expect the same standard throughout every part of the job.
Plasterboarding
Plasterboarding involves fixing plasterboard sheets to walls and ceilings to create a clean, flat surface ready for skimming. It is an essential stage in new builds, loft conversions, extensions, garage conversions, and full renovations, and when it is done properly it also improves the thermal insulation and acoustic performance of a room, which is something a lot of people do not think about until after the work is finished.
The quality of the boards-out stage has a direct impact on the quality of the finished plaster. Boards that are poorly fixed, badly cut, or incorrectly joined cause problems that are difficult and expensive to sort out later down the line. I measure and cut every board accurately, fix them securely, and prepare all joins and screw heads properly so there are no ridges or weak points showing through once the skim coat goes on.
If you are having external walls reboarded, it is also worth considering insulated plasterboard at the same time. It is a straightforward upgrade that improves energy efficiency without the disruption of external works, and it makes sense to do it while the walls are already being done.
Patching & Repairs
Walls and ceilings take a beating over time. Settlement cracks, holes from fixings, water damage, areas disturbed during renovation work, whatever the cause, damaged plasterwork stands out in an otherwise well presented room and needs sorting before you can decorate properly.
Plaster repairs are one of the most common things people search for, and the reason is simple. Most homeowners do not want a full re-plaster, they just want the problem area fixed so it looks like it was never there. That is exactly what I aim for. Matching the depth and texture of the surrounding plaster, feathering the edges correctly, and bringing the finish coat level with the rest of the surface so that once it is painted over, there is no visible trace of the original damage.
No job is too small. I give patch repairs the same preparation and care as a full re-plaster, because cutting corners at this stage always shows in the end result. If it is worth fixing, it is worth fixing properly.
